The Universe is Friendly
I've recently realized that though I spend a lot of time advocating for the rights of those without equitable access to resources, my heart hasn't been convinced that change is truly possible.
Last Friday or Saturday I started to tell myself, at the urging of my beloved lady-fair, that I had the right to choose whether the universe was friendly or the universe was hostile. Clearly, my own history indicates that I believed the universe was hostile, but I felt a movement in my own heart.
I know that my child will mimic what I do, say and believe. That said, I know that I have an amazing opportunity to choose to believe something different.
So, I choose that the universe is friendly.
The moment I started saying that, I've noticed things starting to happen. My best example, right now, is the opportunity I had earlier this week to present my thoughts on the War in Iraq to a group of activists at an Int'l Women's Day Peace March and Rally.
I was nervous in the hours leading up to it. But then I realized that I needed to do something that spoke to white people in a way that could move them to start thinking about infusing the peace movement with an anti-racist analysis.
I need them to do that because when my child is born, I don't want him to live his life as leftist pinko liberal who forgets that he's white. Rather, I need to do this because my child deserves to know that she's on a playing field that keeps people in potholes, and allows others to traverse a nicely paved way.
Here is my speech:
I was asked to address racism, from the perspective of the peace movement. I suppose the best way for me to start would be to say “This is a racist war.”
Monies and lives are being wasted away in unjust war. All these resources could be used to address deteriorating life conditions in the South due to Katrina and Rita, these resources could be used to alleviate embedded generational poverty, and they could be used to finally address the rampant racism throughout the United States.
Did Dr. King not say in his speech opposing the Vietnam War that “we need a radical revolution of values”? Forty years ago he said this, and look around. Has anything changed?
If this is truly a war against terrorism, why is capitalism, under the guise of Democracy and Patriotism, being shoved down the throats of People of Color all over the country and the world?
Well, its because this is a racist war.
A week ago someone asked me how I would define “peace”. I was dumbfounded when I realized that I had no idea how to do that. I have never been asked, nor have I ever thought to define it. Maybe I should have said something along the lines of the absence of war or perhaps even more telling, “the absence of fear.”
Whatever the definition is, which I’m not sure I would be able to tell you today, the question, as do most things I am unable to answer, made me think of my mother.
My mother, she did, and continues to do the very best she can all the time, and its taken me a long time to realize that I get to trust her wisdom, and though it is rare we’re in agreement, I have found that it’s a good learning opportunity.
My mother, she wouldn’t identify as a republican, though she high-fives her republican friends when they win money from me in cards, but she definately supports Bush. She’s married to a retired GI, and was married to a soldier for more than 20 years. She’s a veteran of the Vietnam War, and comes from a legacy of Chamorro’s (people from Guam) dying in battle for “rights” of white people. She hangs a US flag outside of her house in the morning, and takes it in at night. I would call her a patriot, because that is how she would identify, just like most Chamorros. And, just like most Chamorros, she celebrates an annual Chamorro holiday called Guam Liberation Day. It’s the day that the US Army delivered our island from hands of the Japanese during WWII. I think she’s entitled to feel some sense of appreciation for the US military (as are most Chamorros), of course, its taken decades of propoganda by the US to make the Chamorro’s forget that the US occupies the best land on the island and the island is being held captive by the United States.
Does this process sound familiar at all?
My mother, usually a big supporter of whatever military effort is going on in the world, a HUGE supporter of Nixon (I just like to tell people that), is starting to waver on her support of this effort. Yes, she does the yellow ribbon magnet, and American Flag next to her Guam flag on the back of her SUV. I don’t question her, she’s my mother and its her house and her car. But I’ve noticed our conversations have started to change
See, if peace can be defined as the absence of fear, then, based solely on my conversations with my mother, it makes me think about why she’s scared. Maybe she’s scared that my brothers and my cousins are going to be called up. If she was, I wouldn’t blame her. After all, aren’t people of color and poor people the first ones called upon to make sacrifices for their country?
This is a racist war.
White Christians continue to wage a holy war against Arab Muslims. And, not unlike the time of the Crusades, people of color are portrayed as vile, evil, and wrong. In a world dominated the US imperialistic force, why would anyone disagree or even fight against that notion.
This is a racist war.
People of color are a battered people. Just in the last 100 years, the US has worked to prevent Nations of color from governing themselves.
They were communists, then they were nationalists, now they are. . . terrorists.
And its not the first time. If I’m not mistaken, and I’m not, this country has a nasty history of entering into racist conflicts. The United States is a nation deeply rooted in genocide, slavery, racism, and colonization. In fact, we are so engrossed in our dealing with the issues of the world, we are unable to see the purposeful creation of laws that support these racist morals. Most conflicts involving the military, that I can think of, in the last 100 years has been tainted by our racist policies, values and morals. This one is no different.
This is a long speech, content wise, and more than ½ of it is dedicated to this timeline that shows the greed and immorality and absolute refusal of the United States to allow People of Color to govern themselves. In effect, denying their rightful title of “human being”.

This is a racist war.
The Military, for many from my island, is the avenue to economic opportunity. Truly, it is, but at what cost? What is the cost for my cousin Dawn, a single mother with 2 young children who enlisted to get off the island and away from an abusive husband. When, in May, she’s being shipped out.
Guam Liberation Day. I cringe everytime I think about it. But, now I wonder, what would it really mean for my mom, my people and people of color in the US for us to be truly liberated?
The peace movement is powerful, and can be more powerful yet. The left has the opportunity to make this movement anti-racist. Can it? Will it?
It better, or nothing will change. The next conflict we find ourselves engaged in as a country will feel so much like this, like Vietnam, like Korea, WWII. “This country needs to have a radical revolution of values.”
The citizens of this country have decidedly turned against and are opposed to this war. I stand at the front line of that revolution with you, and I refuse to move.
BECAUSE, this is a racist war.
AND, my people have been told to move for 500 years. No More.
